TRIP REPORT – BELIZE AND GUATEMALA – APRIL 18 TO 28, 2008
BELIZE – In February, 2006 I helped to formalize a partnership between MINTS and the Belize Presbyterian Theological Seminary as well as with the Belize Presbyterian Teachers’ College It had been a while since I had made a ministry trip to Belize because this is predominantly an English-speaking country, and all of my own course work and conferences are done only in the Spanish language. The Presbyterian Church of America has missionary staff in Belize and we have also been sending in English-speaking professors of MINTS. I’m delighted to see progress being made in the curriculum and in the leadership training.
Please pray for:
Spanish Language Training – Much of northern Belize (near the Mexico border) is Spanish-speaking and there has been a request for training to take place in the Spanish language among these church leaders. Please pray for the Seminary as it considers offering a “Spanish Track” of leadership training.
Administrative Transition – Because Belize is primarily an English-speaking country and has more cultural and historical ties with the Caribbean, we are going through the process of turning the formal administration of the MINTS-Belize ministry to Rev. Steve McGee, a URCNA missionary who has recently come on full time with MINTS as the coordinator for the Caribbean-English ministries.
Central American Christian College – I had meetings with those who are in the process of forming a leadership training institute among the Evangelical Bible Church in Belmopan who are interested in having MINTS provide training for their church leaders. Please pray as they make a decision regarding this.
GUATEMALA – MINTS formed a partnership with the John Calvin Seminary in Quetzaltenango in 2000. I have been travelling to this Centre twice a year for the last three years. Each time I visit there I have an opportunity to review and grade the term papers they have written since the last visit I was there. I am encouraged to see the development of this ministry, and the growth in maturity of the students.
Please pray for:
Multiplication of Centres – Following the “Missionary Seminary” model of MINTS, John Calvin Seminary has started up four new Centres in the last year. Students who have taken courses with MINTS have been teaching at these new Centres. They have also been recruiting professors from the Presbyterian Church with which they are associated.
Administrative Transition – Rev. Moisés Colop, who has been serving as the director of this seminary, is approaching retirement and is in the process of training and “understudy”. Rafael Par is in the process of learning the responsibilities of being the director. He hopes to graduate with his Bachelor’s in Theology this fall.
MINTS Centre in Guatemala City – I met with the Evangelism Explosion director for the Latin American indigenous population who introduced me to a group of Christian businessmen gathered for a breakfast. Some of these men are looking for opportunities to offer some leadership in their local churches and are considering the formation of a Study Centre among them.
